Year 2 DT – Patchwork

A post in our latest news section.

This week, we have started our new DT topic. We are looking at patchwork and applique and how memories are stitched into beautiful items. Some of the children brought in items that they had made or been given: Eloise brought in her beautiful knitted doll, Elodie showed us her gorgeous patchwork cushion and Addy brought in her wonderful felt toys and purse that she made herself. Miss Pearson showed the children a patchwork quilt that she made with scraps of fabric from garments she has made over the past 40 years and explained the memories she had of all the different fabric.

We are going to be making our own memories of Year 2, creating appliqued patchwork on the theme of North East landmarks: we have chosen the Angel of the North and The Tyne Bridge. The children carefully drew around their templates and took their time to carefully cut out the shapes in their choice of coloured felt. They were so focused with their work and it was wonderful to see how carefully and skillfully they worked, listening to our advice and guidance.

Next week, we will be pinning and stitching the shapes onto fabric. We will be using fabric pens to create detail and using coloured embroidery silk. The children are looking forward to practising this essential life skill.
