Investigating Flavours: Smoothie Taste Testing in DT

A post in our latest news section.

In this week’s DT lesson, following on from last week’s learning about fruits and their origins, the children took part in a smoothie taste-testing activity.

The children blind-tested a range of different smoothies and used careful reasoning to discuss and identify which fruits they thought had been used in each one. They talked about flavour, texture, and sweetness, using descriptive language to explain their ideas and justify their choices.

This activity helped the children to develop an understanding of which fruits work well together, as well as allowing them to reflect on their own preferences and tastes. It also supported them in making thoughtful decisions as designers, which will be important when they begin to plan and create their own smoothies later in the DT unit.

The children approached the activity with great enthusiasm and curiosity, demonstrating excellent speaking, listening, and reasoning skills throughout the lesson.
