This week in Science, Year 1 began an exciting new part of our learning all about plants! As part of our current topic, we are exploring the different kinds of plants, the parts of a plant and observing carefully how plants grow over time.
Together, we planted a class sunflower which we will observe closely across the half term, paying careful attention to the changes we notice as it begins to grow. The children also had the opportunity to choose and plant their own seeds, selecting from basil, wildflowers, sunflowers and cress. This will allow us to compare how different plants grow and discuss what plants need in order to survive and stay healthy.
The children showed fantastic care and responsibility while planting their seeds and were very excited to begin their role as gardeners! Over the coming weeks, the children will be caring for their plants, watering them regularly and making scientific observations about the changes they notice. At the end of the half term, the children will be able to take their plants home to continue caring for them.
